The Challenge
Fundación Grupo Punta Cana is dedicated to addressing the most challenging environmental concerns facing the Dominican Republic, on land and under the sea. By 2021, the life support systems at the Centro de Innovación Marino needed a full renovation to meet FGPC's larger coral out-plant goals and survive the region's harshest weather.
Our Solution
CGS renovated the outdoor greenhouse so coral fragments could safely acclimate to rising ocean temperatures before out-planting. We rebuilt the indoor micro-fragmentation laboratory with fully programmable life support, filtered seawater access, and a 20-kilowatt backup generator. We also added a seawater storage and filtration system to protect corals when inshore water turns inviable during extreme heat.
The Result
FGPC now has the weather-tested infrastructure it needs to meet its larger coral out-plant goals. The renovated lab currently houses hundreds of newly fragmented corals as they grow large enough for the greenhouse, and from there, out onto the reef.
