The Challenge
Coral Morphologic is a Miami-based art-science duo founded in 2007 by Colin Foord and Jared McKay, connecting people and corals through large-scale digital media and art exhibitions. They needed aquaculture and studio systems built for both their scientific work and their exhibitions: mature coral colonies on display, high-energy grow-out for Acropora, and gentler tanks for fleshy stony corals.
Our Solution
CGS designed and constructed five unique aquaculture and studio systems. Two feature shallow aquaculture tubs to maximize coral growing surface area. Two more are systems of precisely aligned glass cube aquariums, built to display matured or otherwise distinguished coral colonies. A final 950-gallon reef crest system rounds out the lab, providing a high-energy environment for Acropora corals while feeding water to a lower-energy aquarium of gentler, fleshy stony corals.
The Result
Coral Morphologic now runs on infrastructure engineered for precision and long-term reliability. Every plumbing, lighting, and water flow system is built ergonomically so maintenance stays safe and easy, since even a small miscalculation can set back young coral progress. Their work has been featured in National Geographic, BBC, NPR, and The New Yorker, and Colin Foord now serves as Director of Science for The Reefline, Miami Beach's landmark underwater sculpture park.
